Decoding Anxiety: Why Your Nervous System Craves 'Signals of Safety' (And How to Find Them)
When anxiety strikes, the standard advice is often to change your thinking: reframe your thoughts, practice deep breathing, or rationalise your fears. While cognitive tools have their place, many people find that no amount of logic can stop their heart from racing or calm the knot in their stomach.
According to Dr Stephen Porges, creator of Polyvagal Theory, this is because anxiety does not originate in your conscious, thinking mind. It originates deep within your autonomic nervous system.
Your brain is constantly performing an unconscious background scan of your environment, your body, and your relationships—a biological process Porges calls neuroception. When your system detects real or perceived danger, it flips into a sympathetic fight-or-flight state.
Crucially, Porges highlights that the fastest way to turn off this internal alarm system is not through isolated willpower, but through signals of safety sent from one human nervous system to another.
We Are Wired for Co-Regulation
In modern culture, we are taught that self-regulation—the ability to calm ourselves down in isolation—is the ultimate sign of emotional maturity. However, evolutionary biology and attachment research tell a very different story.
Human beings are neurobiologically wired for co-regulation. From infancy onward, our nervous systems rely on the presence of calm, safe others to feel secure.
When your system is flooded with anxiety, it is actively searching for specific biological cues that signal the threat has passed:
Voice Prosody: A warm, melodic, and soothing tone of voice (rather than sharp, flat, or rapid speech).
Facial Expressions: Soft eyes, genuine smiles, and open, relaxed facial muscles.
Presence & Posture: Non-threatening body language, gentle eye contact, and an unhurried physical presence.

When your nervous system registers these cues from another person, your ventral vagal pathway (the "social engagement system") activates. This acts as a biological brake on your fight-or-flight response, slowing your heart rate and allowing your body to settle.
The Isolation Trap
When we feel anxious, our protective instincts often drive us to retreat, isolate, or internalise our distress. Yet, isolating an anxious nervous system deprives it of the very thing it needs most: external cues of safety.
Without co-regulation, we are left trying to extinguish a fire while standing inside the flames. This is why attempting to "think your way out" of panic so often fails—the body needs to feel safe before the brain can think clearly.
How to Cultivate Signals of Safety
Countering anxiety using a polyvagal approach means actively weaving safety signals into your daily life and relationships:
1. Seek Out Co-Regulating Relationships
Identify the people in your life whose presence feels naturally grounding. Spend time with individuals whose voice, pace, and energy help your body soften, rather than those who fuel hyper-vigilance or performance pressure.
2. Express Your Need for Presence
When you feel anxiety rising during a conversation, let the other person know what helps your nervous system. Asking for a slower pace, steady eye contact, or simply a reassuring tone can help create a co-regulating bridge.
3. Use Your Own Body as a Safety Beacon
You can also send safety signals downward to your own nervous system. Prolonged exhalations (making your exhale longer than your inhale), placing a warm hand on your chest, and softening your jaw send immediate physiological cues to your brain that you are out of immediate danger.
Healing Through Connection
If chronic anxiety has left your nervous system stuck on high alert, learning to register and receive signals of safety is a vital step toward lasting peace. In psychotherapy, the therapeutic relationship itself acts as an incubator for co-regulation—providing a safe, attuned space where your nervous system can learn to let down its guard.
